NUTRITION SECURITY AFFECTS ALL LEVELS OF SOCIETY

Top global nutrition experts to headline 19th International Congress of Nutrition in Bangkok, Thailand from October 4-9

From rural villagers in the least developed countries to sophisticated urban professionals in the world’s most advanced cities, nutrition affects everyone on the planet, says leading Thai academic, Dr Kraisid Tontisirin. Dr,.Kraisid, Congress President of the International Congress of Nutrition 2009 said the global concerns on food and health prompted the committee to choose “Nutrition Security for All” as the theme for the congress.

“Thailand is one of the leading countries in the region and the world in terms of nutrition research and development and we are proud to be able to host the top nutrition experts from around the world at ICN 2009. The congress will provide innovative solutions to the challenges of securing a safe and adequate food supply and the delivery of basic nutrition and health services for the world,” Dr Kraisid said.

Professor Ricardo Uauy, President of the International Union of Nutrition Sciences, says that world can learn from the dietary regimen n Thailand and Asia as a whole.

“We aim to strengthen nutrition in Asia and learn from the Thailand experience as an excellent case study in nutritional progress.  Since ICN is being hosted in Asia, this is a great opportunity to study the dietary diversity and health aspects of Asian plant and marine foods.  We view this ICN as an opportunity for Asian leadership to present their work to the global nutrition community.” Prof. Ricardo Uauy, President of IUNS said.

ICN 2009 will be officially opened by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindorn on 5 October 2009 at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC). The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Tadataka Yamada, President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Health Program.

ICN 2009 is being managed by AsiaCongress Events Co., Ltd, one of the region’s leading meetings industry experts.

An exhibition will be held in conjunction with ICN 2009, featuring the latest nutrition-related products and services from international food manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, medical product and system manufacturers, publishers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and educational institutions.

In developing and poor countries, governments are constantly looking for more effective ways of ensuring nutrition security for all their citizens, but today’s economic climate is placing enormous pressure on resources,” Dr. Kraisid said.

“Hopefully, governments, national and international authorities will provide a safety net for people that are poor and for those that may lose their jobs during the crisis. Of course, this not only applies to Asia, but also to the rest of the world. Furthermore, let us not forget that prioritizing nutrition, as an ‘investment in human capital’ makes economic sense for everyone.” Prof. Uauy says.

Topics to be addressed at ICN 2009 include the following: Global Efforts Towards Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Nutrition Well-being; Agriculture, Food Supply Systems and Trade for Nutrition Security; Molecular Genetics, Environment, and Diet-Related Diseases; Global Partnerships for Combating Obesity and Chronic Diseases; Lifestyle and Cancer; and Nutrition as a Sound Investment for Human Capital.
